We are a Cal South sanctioned referee association, that welcomes diversity and inclusion amongst our over 150 United States Soccer Federation (USSF) certified referee members, who officiate soccer and futsal primarily in the South West and Westside of Los Angeles, California throughout the year. We cover approximately 5,000 youth and adult games per year for leagues and tournaments, some of which take us beyond our primary area of operation.
The Association was formed in 1976 to serve the emerging soccer community in the Southern California region with referees for adult soccer games. Later on, the Association formalized its stated purpose, which is to recruit, train, and evaluate referees so as to establish and maintain a high level of soccer officiating. In so doing, we aim to promote the game of soccer throughout our community by encouraging a better understanding of the Laws of the Game of Soccer.
Our membership meets on a monthly basis to keep current with the Laws of the Game of Soccer, obtain Cal South provided referee training and to conduct the business of our association. Our Association Board of Directors are elected to terms as provided for in our bylaws. As a Not-for-Profit entity, we are committed to the payment of referee fees, collected on behalf of our members from certain leagues and tournaments, without any deductions from the amounts specified for referee payments.
In 2014, SBSRA introduced and continues to host the monthly Cal South Center of Referee Education (CORE) (formerly known as Referee Professional Development (RPD)) training sessions at North High School in Torrance. These sessions have provided all Cal South registered referees with the only opportunity to benefit from CORE training in the South Bay and Westside parts of Los Angeles. SBSRA is proud of our initiative in hosting CORE training, unique among all of Cal South’s referee associations. Our investment in the CORE program demonstrates our commitment to supporting the quality of refereeing in Southern California.
We welcome the interest of prospective new members, leagues, tournaments and all who love “the beautiful game.” It is you who drive our desire for excellence in the refereeing services we offer. In particular, in conjunction with Cal South’s Female Referee Development Initiative, we especially welcome female referees to join our existing female group of referees.
Please explore our website and contact the applicable Member of the Board of Directors with any inquiries you may have. If you are at least 14 years old and interested in joining us as a referee, please complete our online New Member Application.
